About Tellinghouse

Grant writing isn't just what I do. It's how I've spent my career showing up for people who need resources to survive.

The Credential

On April 24, 2026, I earned the Grant Professional Certified (GPC) credential — the only nationally recognized certification in the grant profession, awarded by the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. It requires documented grant experience, professional references, continuing education, and a rigorous examination. It is the highest standard of excellence in the field, and I hold it because this work deserves that standard.

Where It Started

My name is Jonathan. I've spent over a decade inside nonprofit organizations — not consulting from the outside, but sitting with people in crisis, coordinating services on the ground, and building the budgets, proposals, and compliance systems that keep missions funded. I know what this work looks like from both sides of the table.

I started in community outreach at NJCDC in Paterson, New Jersey one of the most under-resourced cities in the country. For ten years I learned what it actually means to serve people in crisis. I wrote grant reports, managed funder relationships, worked with the Bank of America Foundation, and supervised AmeriCorps VISTA members. I wasn't just adjacent to the work, I was in it.

Building the Foundation

From there I moved into data and compliance at Brevard Homeless Coalition, where I became HMIS Lead Administrator managing federal reporting, HUD compliance, and training 20+ agencies across the continuum of care. I learned that good data tells a story just as powerfully as good writing. The two are inseparable when it comes to making a compelling case to funders.

Where I Am Now

Today I serve as Director of Development at a Vero Beach nonprofit overseeing a $2.1M annual development budget, managing the full grant lifecycle from prospecting through reporting, and building the systems that make sustainable fundraising possible. I bring that same level of operational depth to every client engagement through Tellinghouse.

A place of honest accounting.
That's what we build for you.

A telling-house was a real place: a shelter on the English moors where shepherds would bring their flocks together and sort out what truly belonged to each of them. It was a place of honest accounting, of identifying what was genuinely yours before sending it back out into the world.

That's what I do for nonprofits. I help you sort out your story: what's true, what's compelling, what funders will recognize as authentic. Then I help you tell it. Not a version of it. The real one.

If your mission is real, your community needs are documented, and you're ready to make a serious case to funders, I'm ready to help you tell that story.
